Born in Garkida, Nigeria, raised coast to coast in 4 different states (CA, MD, NY, LA and back to CA), 10 years as a Naval Officer traveling all over the Pacific, Jim finally found a home and put down roots in Carlsbad, CA in 1985. Starting as a Financial Planner in 1989, he found a greater calling, satisfaction, and purpose in serving others in strictly the insurance risk management. He and Leslie opened their own Independent Agency and have succeeded in growing and establishing their business as a community resource. With over 25 years of experience in the profession, Jim serves as President/CEO of the company, as well as Marketing Officer, Sales Manager, Commercial Lines Manager, and Risk Management and Protection Planning (Life, Annuities, Disability, and Business Insurance strategies).
Jim received his Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology from the University of Maryland, and his Masters degree in International Organizations & Negotiations from the Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey. He has earned the Insurance Industry designations of Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC) and Certified Risk Manager (CRM). Jim has served the on the Board of Carlsbad Hi-Noon Rotary Club and is Past-President 2011 – 2012. He also serves on the Board of Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation and is active in the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce, including serving on the Government Affairs Committee, and is a member of the Carlsbad Community Emergency Response Team (CERT1). He loves sailing, golf, cooking and Leslie (not necessarily in that order).
Born and raised a Midwest girl, Leslie felt the call to go west in the early 1980’s. She and Jim moved to Carlsbad in 1985 and knew they were “home”. They started their insurance career in 1989 and together, built Brubaker & Associates, which has been an incredibly satisfying experience.
Her position is Vice-President/CFO, and she specializes in personal lines insurance, group and individual health insurance. In addition to sales and service of insurance products, she also manages human resources, payroll, agency accounting, and executive administrative functions.
When not working, Leslie serves on the board of the Carlsbad Charitable Foundation. She received Volunteer of the Year in 2013 for her service as committee chair for CCF. She also enjoys gardening, cooking, golfing, entertaining, reading, traveling, being with friends and just hanging out at home.
Vicki has been a San Diego resident for most of her adult life. With more than 25 years of experience in the insurance industry, she brings a wealth of knowledge to the Brubaker Team. She began her career working on the company side and eventually moved to the independent side having worked for two San Diego based agencies before joining Brubaker and Associates in 2007. Although she has extensive experience in both the commercial and personal lines of insurance, her focus has long been in meeting client’s personal insurance needs. Over the years, Vicki has earned her reputation by fulfilling the ever-changing needs that constitute individual insurance in Southern California. She enjoys building strong and lasting relationships with her clients and is committed to providing the very best service.
Lauren Haley Hernandez
She entered the insurance workplace with Brubaker back in 2009. After obtaining her Insurance license in 2011 she has grown very knowledgeable in the industry. As our office manager, Lauren wears many hats and her duties extend to servicing and writing both Commercial and Personal lines. All of her training and experience is focused on meeting the specific needs of our clients and she ensures that they receive the best service possible. With the strong desire to learn, she also obtained her Certified Insurance Service Representative (CISR) designation in 2013. Lauren graduated in 2008 from Cal State University of Long Beach, with a Bachelors degree in International Studies and a minor in Spanish. She also teaches a fitness class before work and on the weekends! During her free time she is adventuring around with her fiance and dog Taz 🙂
